Contactor Types, Codes and Categories

Many Contactor types and code available in the market, So we have to find the suitable Contactor Type and Code or Class which we want.

What is Contactor Types and Code in Electrical

AC-1: These duty contactors are used in resistive loads such as heaters and Boiler. AC-1 contactors Non-inductive or slightly inductive loads used that is the power factor of the load between 0.95 to 1.

Example for AC1: Power Load-Bank, Iron, Heaters, Boiler etc...

AC-2: This type contactor uses in a slip-ring motor starters such as Switching on and off the motor. It is mostly prefered for high Torque current applications.

AC-3: These types of contactor is generally use for the industrial Induction motors, and switches off motor during the running time which means the contactor can supply high current continuously. E.g. Induction motors, Industrial Fan etc.

AC-1 and AC-3 Contactor Resolution:

AC-1 - This category we can apply to all AC loads where the power factor is more than 0.95. AC-1 contactors are primarily non-inductive or slightly inductive loads, such as resistive loads. Breaking the arc remains easily with minimal arcing and contact wear. The making cap is 1.5.

AC-3 - This type contactor appling to squirrel-cage motors with breaking during normally running of the motors.

The contactor closing time, makes high inrush current in the contactor. It is almost 5 to 7 times of the motor rated full load current.

In opening, the contactor breaks the Motor rated full load current.

Other Contactors Codes and it Usages:

AC-4: Frequently On and Off  (rapid start stop) Squirrel-cage motors such contractors are used. AC-4 Contactor have ability to break high starting current starting such as inching operation. E.g: Lift, Cranes etc...

AC-5a: It is uses in discharge lamps such as sodium vapor lamps, mercury vapor and Auxiliary Control circuits.

AC-5b: These type contactors uses in Electrical incandescent lamp switching.

AC-6a: These type uses for switching of Transformer.

AC-6b: These type uses for Switching of Capacitor Bank.

AC-7a: These type uses for Slightly Inductive Load in Household or same type of load.

AC-7b: These type uses for Household Application motor load.

AC-8a: These type uses for Hermetic refrigerant Compressor Motor and Manual O/L Reset.

AC-8b:  These type uses for Hermetic refrigerant Compressor Motor with O/L Reset in Auto.

AC-12: These type uses for Control of Restive and Solid State Load with opto-coupler Isolation.

AC-13:  These type uses for Control of Restive Load / Solid State and T/C Isolation.

AC-14: These type uses for less than 72VA Small Electro Magnetic Load Control supply.

AC-15: These type uses for more than 72VA Small Electro Magnetic Load control supply.

Contactor Code and Making Cap Chart:

Contactor Code                  Making Cap

       AC-1                                     1.5

      AC-2                                     4

      AC-3                                 10

      AC-4                               12

      AC-5a                             3

      AC-5b                             1.5

      AC-6a                           12

      AC-6b                           12

      AC-7a                             1.5

      AC-7b                             8

      AC-8a                             6

      AC-8b                             6

      AC-11                             6

      AC-12                             6

      AC-13                           10

      AC-14                             6

      AC-15                           10

As per above Chart

Type of Contactor = AC-3

Size of the Main Contactor = 100% X Full Load Current (Line).

Size of Main the Contactor =100% X 8 = 8 Amp.

Making / Breaking Contactor Capacity = Value above Chart X Full Load Current (Line).

Making / Breaking Contactor Capacity =10 X 8 = 80 Amp.

I think you get an idea of Contactor Types and it Code , So we have to select the suitable Contactor Type and Code or Class which we want from this method.

Thanks for visit and choose for our blog to increase your good knoledge.
