What is a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)?

A programmable logic controller (PLC), also known as a programmable controller, is usually given for the type of computer used in commercial and industrial control applications. Such as pressure pumps and automation equipment.

While specific applications vary widely, all PLC input and other variable values are monitored, decide on a stored program and control the output to automate the process or machine. This course is meant to give you basic information on the functions and configurations of PLC with emphasis on Siemens. or a programmable logic controller (PLC) consists of a PLC (programmable logic controller) as well as workers such as sensors, workers, and workers. The sensors and actuators are connected to the PLC independent from the final work. The actual work of the machine or operation is determined by the program. There are several instructions in this program organized by PLC. The plc sensor takes the position from the sensor and, on the basis of the program's instructions, activates the actuators on or off.

Basic of PLC Operation

The basic elements of PLC include input modules or points, central processing units (CPUs), output modules, or points and programming tools. The type of input module or points used by Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) depends on the types of input devices used. Some input modules or points answer digital inputs, also called separate inputs, which are either on or off. Other modules or inputs respond to analog signals. These represent the position of the machine or process as a series of analog signal voltages or current values. (4-20 mA, 0-20 mA, 0-10 V)

Architecture of plc

The central processing unit is the heart of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) PLC. The program is stored and executed in it. Mode selector, backup battery, connection, status and error signal for 24V DC, LEDs, interface, processor, and memory are found on or on this.

Digital module,

These are modules designed for current machine or operation voltage and current level. With their help, it is possible to send and receive "binary" signals.

Analog module, these modules are capable of converting analog signals into digital signals so that the signal can be processed by the CPU. As a result, these modules are suitable for closed-loop control functions such as temperature, level or speed control.

Memory card slot keeps a memory card slot memory card. The memory card is using to store the program.

The user program has not been executed in STOP mode. The program is executed in a programmable mode in  Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Memory. The CPU processor program executes programs in memory.

The advantages of plc are as follows

  • Easy and fast to make changes
  • Plc has integrated diagnostics and overrides programs.
  • Diagnostics are available centrally.
  • The application can be documented immediately.
  • Applications can be duplicated in faster and less costly.
